Man Steals, Crashes Unmarked Police Cruiser on Miami Beach: Cops

A man is facing charges after allegedly stealing and crashing an unmarked police cruiser in Miami Beach Sunday.

Miami Beach police say an unmarked Ford Fusion police vehicle was stolen from 17th Street and Washington Avenue.

The man who allegedly stole the car, identified as 25-year-old Leon Perrymond, drove at a high rate of speed and lost control at 13th Street and Meridian Avenue, police said.

The stolen car crashed into multiple parked cars along Meridian Avenue. Miami Beach Fire Rescue took Perrymond to the hospital, and he was later charged with grand theft, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and fleeing and eluding police.

A witness told NBC 6 that she was on Meridian and 15th Avenue when she saw what she thought was a hit and run crash involving a police officer, and found it all to be very confusing.

“It had the lights on. All of a sudden, when I was waiting at the light, another car just rammed straight into the back of it and the police car just took off. Before I was able to move, there was about 15-20 police cars surrounding it,” said Joanne Burgess.

Police are still investigating the incident.
