Body Cam Footage Released After Man With Knife Tased by Miami Officers Dies

Miami police have released body cam footage after a man who was tased by officers died over the weekend.

Police responded early Sunday to the area of NE 5th Avenue and 79th Street to a man, who appeared to be under the influence of narcotics, acting irrationally in the middle of the street, according to law enforcement.

In the body cam footage released Tuesday, officers eventually convinced him to move to the sidewalk. He became combative, pulled out a knife and made stabbing motions with it. He also appeared to attempt to stab at himself.

Fire Rescue was called to the scene. The officers tell the man several times to "drop the knife." He doesn't comply.

"We're gonna do the taser," an officer is heard saying.

Police then deployed their taser guns. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead an hour later.

Officials identified the man as 39-year-old Luis Alberto Luna, and by his alias, Bobby Fischer. He had several prior offenses, felony charges and previous convictions, according to police.

Luna's father, Alberto Luna, said his son had mental health issues and cops acted cruelly.

"Nobody likes to see a kid get executed the way they did," he said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the death, along with the officers involved.

"All officers acted properly within departmental policy," deputy chief of police Ron Papier told NBC 6.
