Police Say Alleged Armed Robber Attacked K-9 Officer

Fort Lauderdale Police said they have arrested a man who allegedly hit a man and a woman in the face with a pistol, robbed them, and later beat a K-9 officer during his arrest.

Police said, Mario Lopez, 26, approached a man on North Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard early Monday morning and started hitting him multiple times in the face and head with a gun. Police said Lopez then took all of his victim’s belongings.

According to Fort Lauderdale Police, the victim’s family became concerned when he didn’t return to their hotel and his fiancé and her mom went to look for him. When they found him in the road, police said Lopez approached the two women and hit the mother in the face with the gun before ordering them to lie down on the ground.

Police said Lopez then hit both of them multiple times with the gun and stole items from them. As Lopez walked away, Fort Lauderdale Police said he went back to the first victim and hit the man more times before running away from the scene.

Lopez was found in the area of University Drive and I-595 in Davie. FLPD said when Lopez saw police, he violently resisted and when a K-9 officer assisted, Lopez allegedly kicked and choked the dog.

Police said Lopez faces multiple charges including: armed robbery with a firearm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by convicted felon, resisting without violence, resisting with violence, and battery of a police dog.

It's unknown if Lopez has an attorney.
