Police have taken two men into custody after an alleged attempt to steal a vehicle in southwest Miami-Dade led to a chase early Wednesday.

Officers responded around 3 a.m. near Southwest 92nd Avenue after seeing a tow truck hauling a Ford F-150 without the safety chains attached, Miami-Dade Police said.

Officials said officers tried to stop the tow truck but the driver refused to stop and disengaged the F-150 while driving.

The men continued driving before stopping and backing into a cop car, leading to a chase that ended near Southwest 89th Avenue and 36th Street, officials said.

The driver, 26-year-old Ariel Rodriguez, and the passenger, 32-year-old Sergio Aguirre, both bailed from the truck and later were found.

"We could’ve had a dead officer, we could’ve had more property damage, other people affected," said MDPD Det. Alvaro Zabaleta. "These people were brazen enough to utilize whatever means, use their own resources as weapons in order to get away."

Rodriguez is facing charges that include attempted second-degree murder, fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, grand theft and resisting an officer without violence.

Aguirre is also charged with attempted second-degree murder, grand theft and resisting an officer without violence.
