A Tampa postal inspector has admitted to stealing money orders from the mail.
The Tampa Bay Times reports 40-year-old John P. Ebsworth-Mojica admitted to taking a parcel containing five Postal Service money orders worth $1,000 each in a plea agreement filed Wednesday.
He has agreed to plead guilty on Jan. 7 to one count of embezzlement or theft of mail matter by a Postal Service officer or employee.
According to the plea agreement, Ebsworth-Mojica used his own checking account at the Tampa Postal Federal Credit Union in June to cash one of the money orders.
Paul Krenn, a spokesman for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, says cases such as these are rare.
Ebsworth-Mojica had been working for the Postal Inspection Service since 2007. He resigned in July.
