South Florida

Preview of The Week Ahead: 12/10 – 12/16

From a baseball legend lending a helping hand with hurricane relief, to another giving a very special speech, there’s plenty happening in South Florida over the next few days. Here’s a look at The Week Ahead:

Court Hearing for Woman Accused of Running Over Principal: Marilyn Aguilera, the woman accused of running over a popular South Florida school principal, will go back in front of a judge on Monday. Aguilera was expected to plead guilty to the drunk driving accident that left South Dade principal Javier Perez severely paralyzed, but the original plea deal was taken off the table after Aguilera tested positive for marijuana use.

Derek Jeter Sends Furniture to Puerto Rico: New Miami Marlins owner Derek Jeter is teaming up with local real estate developers on Monday to send much needed furniture to storm battered Puerto Rico. Jeter, Jorge Posada and other developers are taking the furniture out of a soon to be demolished condo in Sunny Isles and shipping it to the island to fill the homes of those who lost just about everything in the recent hurricanes.

First Night of Hanukkah: Tuesday marks the first night of Hanukkah. The first of the eight candles will be lit at homes and ceremonies across the world. In South Florida, there will be numerous outdoor menorah events at most Jewish community centers and synagogues.

CAMACOL Holiday Basket Distribution: Hundreds of people waited in line last week to get their tickets and this Wednesday, they’ll make the CAMACOL lines once again to actually receive their basket of holiday food. It’s a South Florida tradition that helps some of our neediest communities get a little something extra for their holiday meals. Each basket of delicious and nutritious food contains enough food for an entire family.

Alex Rodriguez to Give Commencement Speech: Students at the University of Miami are in for a special treat at this year’s fall commencement ceremony on Thursday. 14-time Major League All-Star Alex Rodriguez will address more than 600 undergraduates and their families.

NBC 6 Café in Miramar: On Friday, the NBC 6 Café will roll into Miramar. Join Sheli, Eric, Kelly and Adam at the Miramar Fire Station, as we team up to bring toys to children in our community with our Caravan of Joy drive. They will be there starting at 9:30 a.m. Stop by, drop off a gift, and get some coffee.
