Preview of The Week Ahead: 8/6 – 8/12

South Florida is getting ready to welcome children and teachers back to school. It’s just one of the things happening this week, so let’s get you primed for The Week Ahead:

Free Back to School Immunizations: Starting on Monday, the Department of Health in Broward County is offering free back-to-school immunizations. Children from four to 18 years of age can get their free back-to-school shots at Lauderhill Mall.

Opioid Epidemic Roundtable: On Tuesday, Florida lawmakers will meet to talk about the opioid epidemic in Palm Beach County. They hope to bring attention to the issue and hear from families directly affected by the growing crisis.

Kodak Black to Perform: On Thursday, rapper Kodak Black is taking the stage for the first time since his release from a Broward County jail. He will perform at the Watsco Center at 7 p.m. He was most recently arrested for violating the terms of his house arrest.

New Teachers for Miami-Dade County Public Schools: Miami-Dade County is getting 500 new teachers this school year. The new teachers will begin their four day orientation program on Thursday, where they will learn about student performance and effective teaching practices.

Sentencing in Health Care Fraud Case: On Friday, Dr. Salomon Melgen will be sentenced for his role in one of the biggest cases of health care fraud. The Palm Beach County eye doctor was found guilty of medicare fraud in an investigation tied to New Jersey Bob Menendez. Melgen faces life in prison.

Opening of Schools Address: On Friday, Miami-Dade County Superintendent Alberto Carvalho will hold his annual Opening of Schools address. That’s where he will share his vision for the new school year and will encourage continued support from the community.
