Probe Leads to Changes at Gainesville Police Department

Gainesville's police chief is ordering a reorganization of the department and more sexual harassment training following an internal investigation.

Gainesville Police Chief Tony Jones made the announcement Wednesday following an investigation of longtime police Capt. Brian Helmerson in a sexual harassment matter. The probe resulted in a recommendation that he be fired for improper conduct.

The 25-year veteran Helmerson retired instead of being fired after the probe's findings were released. The department did not release more details.

Following the investigation, Jones said changes to the department will begin to take effect Jan. 1. He plans to hold a town hall meeting to discuss the reorganization in detail.

The Gainesville Sun reports that Jones is ordering enhanced sexual harassment training for all supervisory staff as well.
