An appeals court has allowed a Democratic candidate for Florida attorney general to be reinstated on the ballot.

The state's 1st District Court of Appeal issued a stay on Monday on a Circuit Court ruling, allowing Ryan Torrens to continue his candidacy. A spokeswoman for the Department of Elections said the primary race will proceed as normal.

The Tampa attorney is challenging state Rep. Sean Shaw in the race. Two Republicans are running on the GOP side. Attorney General Pam Bondi is leaving office due to term limits.

A Leon County judge ruled on Friday that Torrens had flouted the state's campaign finance laws in order to qualify for the race. Judge Karen Gievers ruled that Torrens relied on an illegal contribution in order to have enough money to pay the $7,738 qualifying fee.
