Ranch Owner Charged With Animal Cruelty After Horse's Death

The owner of a horse ranch and her companion have been charged with more than a dozen counts of animal cruelty.

Hillsborough County Sheriff's officials said 14 horses at Little Cherokee Ranch were malnourished and had lost a high percentage of their normal body fat, which led to excessive or repeated infliction of unnecessary pain and suffering. One horse died and another suffered a broken tail that was untreated.

Dale Jahnke-Davis, 53, and Humberto DeJesus, 54, were arrested Saturday and charged with two felony counts and 12 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.

The Tampa Bay Times reports it's unclear whether the horses continue to be boarded at the ranch or elsewhere.
