Renovations Continue at Miami Marine Stadium

For the first time since Hurricane Andrew, the Miami Marine Stadium is seeing light. It's all part of the new push to restore the multi-million dollar dilapidated stadium.

For the first time in more than 20 years, the National Trust for Historic Preservation lit up the facility for the public to see Friday and Saturday.

The ancient gem is covered in graffiti, has rusted railings and broken seats. But the memories created there can't be erased.

"So many important cultural moments happened. President Nixon spoke here, Jimmy Buffet gave one of the greatest concerts of his life right here in the bay. It is a place that is quintessential to South Florida and should be saved for future generations," said Jason Clement with the National Trust.

Just last year, after decades of nothing, plans for renovations were announced to turn the Miami Marine Stadium into a state-of-the-art venue with a museum and a park. In 2016, the property will be the stage for the Miami International Boat Show.

The new temporary lighting showcased Thursday bathes the structure and is for the public to enjoy by boat in Biscayne Bay.

"We can kind of see a light at the end of the tunnel here and there's so much support for bringing it back to life," Clement said.
