Rep. Meek Hits Ground Running in Haiti

Films Miami-Dade team rescuing child in rubble

South Florida congressman Kendrick Meek is getting an up-close look at the destruction in Haiti, joining the Miami Dade Urban Search and Rescue team as it looks for survivors in Port-au-Prince.

Meek arrived in Haiti yesterday and immediately witnessed first-hand the dramatic rescue of a 2-year-old girl who had been buried under the rubble for nearly six days.

Meek even managed to capture the moment on his iPhone.

Just hours earlier, Meek had boarded a flight from Miami to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic and drove to the Haitian border. He had met with Vice President Joe Biden in Miami on Saturday.

Meek, who represents the district which includes Little Haiti, said he has received calls from several stranded people and Haitian Americans who have family missing in the earthquake aftermath.
