Miami Police spokesperson Kiara Delva said the incident began around 2:40 p.m. when an officer working in the Allapattah neighborhood noticed a car that had been taken during an armed carjacking on Monday.

The officer tried to stop the car but the driver fled and a pursuit began. The pursuit ended in the area of U.S. 1 near Southwest 16th Avenue when an officer was involved in the fiery crash with the car.

Footage from the scene showed the red car and a Miami Police car engulfed in flames. Firefighters responded and quickly extinguished the flames.

The officer and the suspect in the car were both taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

Detectives are still investigating the incident and are trying to determine if the suspect involved in the crash was involved in the carjacking, Delva said.

Delva didn't release the name of the suspect but said he was being detained.
