Man Killed in Road Rage Shooting Near Palmetto Expressway: Florida Highway Patrol

Officials say dispute between truck driver, motorist turned deadly

A man was killed in a road rage shooting off the Palmetto Expressway in Miami-Dade Friday morning, officials said.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers and Miami-Dade Police officers responded to the scene on the southbound Palmetto ramp to Northwest 25th Street around 10 a.m.

The victim has been identified by his family as 31-year-old Jason Giles.

Officials said the incident began as a dispute between a tractor-trailer driver and the driver of a Nissan Altima.

Both men got out of their vehicles and began fighting on the ramp, and when the truck driver pulled out a knife, the driver of the Altima pulled out a gun and shot him, officials said.

"One driver pulled off, the other said the other driver got off, there was a physical confrontation, one produced a knife, that's when the other one produced a firearm," Miami-Dade Police Det. Alvaro Zabaleta said."Shots were fired, unfortunately he was pronounced deceased at the scene."

Footage showed his covered in a yellow tarp at the scene.

The southbound exit ramp at Northwest 25th Street was closed while authorities investigated.

It was unknown if the driver of the Altima would be charged in the shooting but he was detained and was being questioned by homicide detectives.

"Well we've gotta see because the preliminary information that we received may not detail the whole totality of the circumstances," Zabaleta said. "We have to let the investigation take its course and we'll see where that goes."
