Convicted middle school killer Michael Hernandez will have to wait a few more months to learn whether he will get a new prison sentence for the 2004 slaying of his best friend when both were 14.
Miami-Dade Circuit Judge John Schlesinger granted a defense motion for a continuance Tuesday, the day before a three-day resentencing hearing was to begin. Schlesinger reset the case for early January.
Now 25, Hernandez received a mandatory life sentence for the stabbing death of Jaime Gough in a middle school bathroom. The new hearing was required after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that juveniles could not automatically be sentenced to life without chance of parole. The Florida Legislature later made that ruling retroactive.
Trial evidence showed Hernandez was obsessed with becoming a serial killer.
