Miami Police chased down a robbery suspect on Monday who they said assaulted one of their own.
The incident started before noon when police responded to a call of a retail theft in the area of Southwest 34th Avenue and 24th Street.
Police said Evelio Montero, 48, of Homestead was being taken into custody when he hit the officer and ran off.
Officers eventually tracked him down, just a few blocks away in someone's yard.
Montero has been charged with grand theft, battery on a police officer and resisting arrest with violence.
There's no word on whether he has an attorney.
