Rollover Crash Shuts Down Interstate 195 Lanes at Alton Road

The crash happened just before 5 p.m. at the exit heading away from Miami Beach.

A teenager is dead and six other people were injured after an SUV lost control on the Julia Tuttle Causeway and slammed into a guardrail Saturday.

The single vehicle crash happened just before 5 p.m. at the Alton Road exit of Interstate 195 heading away from Miami Beach, where the South Beach Wine and Food Festival was taking place, temporarily shutting down traffic in both directions.

Seven people were inside the Chevy Trailblazer when it lost control, tearing through the metal guardrail and rolling down an embankment, stopping just 10-feet short of Biscayne Bay.

"The most critical one was a 14-year-old girl who was not breathing, unresponsive, and paramedics feverishly performed CPR," said Lt. Iggy Carroll with Miami Fire Rescue.

The girl was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, but she could not be revived, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The driver and 5 other passengers were taken to Ryder in serious or critical condition.

Investigators are now looking into the cause of the accident and whether or not seat belts were used.

"The investigation is still ongoing to try and determine exactly if they're local or if they're related," Carroll said. "But this is one of those situations where we're not sure if they were wearing their seat belts or not."

An alcohol investigation is still pending.
