Closures and Cancellations At Schools, Universities Ahead of Dorian

Some schools and universities in South Florida have started to announce closures and cancellations ahead of Hurricane Dorian.

Miami-Dade Schools: There will be no impact to the regular school day or afterschool care programs on Friday, August 30. All school facilities will be secured, and all adult education classes will be cancelled beginning Friday, August 30, at 6:00 p.m. until further notice. Starting Saturday and until further notice, all athletic activities and practices will be suspended.

Archdiocese of Miami: Schools will be closed on Tuesday. Catholic schools will follow the public schools in respective counties as to when schools will reopen.

Broward Schools: Superintendent Robert Runcie announced that all schools will be open Friday, and all after school activities will continue Thursday and Friday. Schools will be closed, however, Saturday through Monday (Labor Day).

Palmer Trinity School: Palmer Trinity School will be closed on Tuesday, September 3. All campus activities have been canceled this weekend, and the campus will be closed effective Saturday, August 31 until further notice.

The University of Miami: Classes at the Coral Gables, marine, and medical campuses will be canceled beginning at noon on Friday, Aug. 30, and continuing through Tuesday, Sept. 3. Classes are expected to resume on Wednesday, Sept. 4.

Florida International University: Classes are canceled Friday and Saturday (Aug. 30 and 31, 2019) at all FIU locations and online in preparation for Hurricane Dorian.

Nova Southeastern University: NSU is closely monitoring Hurricane Dorian. As of Thurs., Aug. 29 all NSU campuses throughout Florida and Puerto Rico are open with normal operations. Updates to campus openings/closures will be posted here.

Miami-Dade College: In an abundance of caution, MDC will cancel classes and cease all operations at 3 p.m., Friday Aug. 30 through Tuesday, Sept. 3. During this time, all special events have also been cancelled. MDC will make announcements regarding operations Wednesday and the remainder of next week at a later time.

Broward College: All Broward College campuses and partnership centers will close at noon, Saturday, Aug.31 and remain closed until further notice. Communication updates will be sent through the College’s emergency management messaging system, BC ALERTS.

Barry University: Barry University campuses in Miami Shores and our Andreas School of Law in Orlando, as well as all other sites throughout Florida, will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, until further notice.

Florida Memorial University: FMU announced it is suspending classes until Sept. 3 or until further notice.

College of the Florida Keys: The College of the Florida Keys (CFK) will close Saturday, August 31 at 5 p.m. through Tuesday, September 3. During this time, all classes are cancelled and offices at the Key West Campus and Middle Keys and Upper Keys Centers will be closed to the public. Only Lagoon Landing residents and authorized College personnel, with proper ID, will be permitted on the Key West Campus. Currently, the College plans to re-open on Wednesday, September 4.
