Escaped Inmate Arrested in West Palm Beach

Escaped inmate Ronald McCoy was arrested Monday in West Palm Beach.

West Palm Beach Police arrested escaped prisoner Ronald McCoy Monday evening after the Florida Department of Law Enforcement received a tip that the escapee was in Palm Beach County.

McCoy, 39, was found at a Sunoco gas station at Australian and 45th Street. McCoy was in the truck and still wearing his prison uniform when he was captured. West Palm Beach Police said McCoy was in a stolen maroon truck when he was arrested without incident.

McCoy escaped from Dade Correctional Institution in Florida City last Friday. FDLE investigators believe McCoy hid in a trash dumpster to get out of the prison. He was in jail serving a life sentence for robbery with a deadly weapon in Alachua County.

“The Department of Corrections takes very seriously its primary mission of protecting the safety of Florida’s families,” said state Department of Corrections Secretary Michael Crews in a statement. “I’d like to express our deepest gratitude to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and all of our law enforcement partners for their steadfast diligence and skill in apprehending escaped inmate McCoy.”

McCoy is currently at the Palm Beach County Jail where he will be interviewed by FDLE agents.
