Sept. 11 South Florida Commemorations

On the 10th anniversary of the attacks, organizations across South Florida have planned events to honor those who were killed on 9/11

A list of events happening throughout South Florida on Sunday Sept. 11, arranged in chronological order. 

7 a.m.: Greater Broward Fire Fighter Charities will hold the annual Hero's 5K Fun Run and Walk to benefit the LAFF Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial. Location: Hollywood Beach Broadwalk Johnson Street and A-1-A, Hollywood. Fee: $25 Pre-registered, $20 Gold Coast Runner Member, and $30 on race day. Facebook.com/FireFighter5krun 

7:30 a.m.: Non-profit Operation Homefront Florida is hosting its annual Freedom Walk and Run 5K in West Palm Beach. The group will commemorate the 10th anniversary of September 11 and honor military families and first responders. Location: City Commons, 101 S. Flagler Drive in downtown West Palm Beach. Registration opens at 6:30a.m. Registration is $25 per person and $50 for families before Sept. 5 . $10 fee for police officers, fire fighters and active service members. OperationHomefront.net.

8:30 a.m. Pembroke Pines unveils the city’s 9/11 memorial designed by artists Felix Gonzalez and Benoit Menasche. Location: Pembroke Pines City Center, 10300 Pines Boulevard.

8:45 a.m.: City of Coral Springs hosts the annual Day of Remembrance. Location: Northwest Regional Library, 3151 N. University Drive, Coral Springs.

9 a.m.: American Legion Post 321- Cooper City and Forgotten Soldiers Outreach hosts “Let us Not Forget” 9/11 Remembrance Day. $5 breakfast. Location: 9081 SW 51st Street, Cooper City. alfl321.org.

9 a.m.: The City of Deerfield Beach will pay tribute to the memory of those who died on Sept. 11. Location: Deerfield Beach at the flagpole located at the intersection of Hillsboro Boulevard and Ocean Way, SE 21st Avenue in Deerfield Beach.

9:30 a.m.: Fort Lauderdale Fire and Safety Museum to host 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony. Location: Fort Lauderdale Fire Museum, 1022 West Las Olas Blvd.

10 a.m.: Archbishop Thomas Wenski will hold a mass commemorating the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Location: St. Mary's Cathedral 7525 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami.

Noon: The Knights of Columbus 3757, Marian Council, will be holding a memorial service for the victims of September 11, 2001 at their lodge on Sept. 11 at noon. The service is free. Location: 12100 West Dixie Highway, North Miami.

12:30 - 2 p.m. Fifth Annual Freedom Walk at Homestead. Free registration begins at 12:30 pm, at 1:00 pm is the Reflection Program, and at 1:30 p.m. the walk starts.

1 p.m. The City of Deerfield Beach will participate in the U.S. Senate's National Moment of Remembrance on Sept. 11. For more information: deerfield-beach.com.

3 p.m.: The City of Miami Beach Mayor and Commission Office is presenting a 9/11 Remembrance at Miami Beach City Hall. The ceremony will take place outside of City Hall near the flagpole. A ceremonial reading of the victims' names will begin at 3:15pm.

5 p.m.– 8 p.m.: The Lauderdale Lakes Moose Lodge 2267 in Tamarac will be hosting a 9/11 Tribute. Speakers include Congressman Alan West and Sheriff Al Lamberti. Location: 6191 Rock Island Road, Tamarac.

7 p.m.: MCCJ Dialog with the Archdiocese of Miami, the Rabbinical Assembly of Greater Miami, the JCRC, and ADL host a service of prayer. Location: Temple Judea located on the corner of US 1 and Granada Boulevard, Coral Gables.
