21 Migrants Detained After Large Group Comes Ashore in Haulover Beach

NBC Universal, Inc.

More than 20 people were detained after a large group of migrants came ashore in Haulover Beach Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Sunny Isles Police officials said they believe the group from Haiti were dropped off in the area of 158th Street and Collins Avenue around 10:30 a.m.

Footage from a resident showed the boat pulling up to the shoreline and the migrants hopping off and running inland on the beach.

Border Patrol officials said 21 people were detained, including what appeared to be a young girl and two infants.

Police said a marine patrol was looking for the boat that dropped them off.

One resident said it's not the first human smuggling boat he's seen in the area.

"Well I’ve seen boats come crash into shore and everybody jumps out the boat and runs through in different directions, even in the daytime and nighttime," Rick Lawrence said. "You know, it’s dangerous. We live right next to the park."

No other information was immediately known.
