Sheriff's Candidate, Wife Investigated for Domestic Incident

The Alachua County Sheriff's Office is investigating a domestic violence case involving two of its deputies.

Spokesman Art Forgey says deputies were called July 30 to a domestic battery call involving Detective Zac Zedalis and his wife Kathleen, a sergeant with the department. They've both been suspended pending criminal and internal investigations.

Zac Zedalis is a former University of Florida football player who is a candidate for sheriff.

He told the Gainesville Sun on Thursday that he believes the sheriff's office released details about the suspension as a political move.

Sheriff Sadie Darnell, who is seeking re-election, denied that claim.

The agency said Thursday that to "quell complaints of political motivation," Darnell has asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to take over the investigation.
