Skywatchers are hoping the Perseid Meteor Shower will be bringing a show of shooting stars to South Florida this week.
The activity will peak Saturday morning just before sunrise, but viewing will be ripe for enjoyment starting Tuesday. In fact, the sooner you mark the calendar, the better. Since the August full moon arrives on the Saturday the 13th, peak activity will appear dim.
Other years, when the full moon doesn’t interfere with the show, onlookers can see up 100 meteors per hour on the most active night. This year we’ll only be able to see a fraction.
South Florida viewing will be obstructed additionally by partly cloudy conditions. The best viewing opportunities are between moonset and dawn, when the sky is darkest.
