“Smart” Basel: A How-To Guide On Navigating Miami's Art Week

All eyes are on South Florida as Art Basel and Miami Art Week are back and in full force.

Locals and tourists alike are flocking to South Beach, the Design District and Wynwood to get a glimpse at some of the art on display, as well as enjoy the parties and maybe even get a glimpse at some A-listers who are in town.

On South Beach Wednesday, many city officials and the global director of Art Basel were on hand at the Miami Beach Convention Center to kick off the 17th annual Art Basel event. This is the first Art Basel being held at the city’s new convention center.

More than 200 art galleries and 4,000 artists are being featured at Art Basel this year. Pieces range from paintings to sculptures and photography.

Ticket prices start at $40 and can be purchased here. Art Basel opens to the public on Thursday at 3 p.m. and runs through Sunday.

Meanwhile in Miami, there are ton of other art fairs throughout Downtown Miami, Wynwood and the Design District that are sure to give you the art fix that you need.

Major art fairs like Art Miami / CONTEXT, Scope, Design Miami, Red Dot and Untitled Art are all back this year. Those fairs are located throughout South Florida, including: Miami Beach, Miami, Downtown Miami and Wynwood. Click on each site to see when they open and how much it costs to attend.

But there are plenty of smaller pop-up events happening around town, as well.

HIVE in Wynwood promises a cocktail and culinary experience. HIVE is a four day event that allows guests to sip on cocktails, dance to live music and even climb a 30-foot tall rainbow bridge, making for a perfect Instagrammable moment. It’s free to attend, but if you RSVP on HIVE’s website, you can get a free drink. The event opens Thursday at 3 p.m.

ARTECHOUSE in Miami Beach is a brand-new experience that made its way to Miami by way of Washington, D.C. The five-month long exhibit is a virtual playground for people of all ages. The exhibit features digital light sculptures by technology-driven works of art made by artists who are forerunners in the arts and technology. The exhibit opens to the public on Saturday. Tickets can be purchased here

These are just some of the events happening around town. But with so much to do, that can only mean one thing: traffic.

Officials are advising motorists to prepare for possible delays and to seek alternate routes when traveling to Miami Beach.

The use of ridesharing services such as Uber and Lyft is encouraged.

The free Art Week shuttle service will operate from Thursday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., running at a frequency of approximately 20 minutes.

Metrorail, Metromover and Metrobus will all operate on a normal weekend service and an increased number of buses and trains during events.
