Son Gets Slap on the Wrist, Mom Pleads Not Guilty in Shooting

Nine months for Hollywood boy who shot friend as mom fights negligence charge

The Hollywood mother and son charged with the shooting death of the teen's friend were both in court Tuesday, where the son entered a plea of no contest and the mother plead not guilty.

Jeff Dilworth, 14, was sentenced to nine months in a juvenile detention center and will be on supervised release until he turns 21.

Dilworth had been charged with manslaughter in the April 28 death of Daniel Torres. Dilworth had claimed that he accidentally shot Torres, 13, in the head while the two were playing with a loaded gun.

The two were at Dilworth's Hollywood home when they found his mom's 9mm pistol fully loaded in her nightstand.

Dilworth told police that he watched Torres unload the gun then took it from him. He squeezed the trigger and the bullet still in the chamber struck Torres in the back of the head.

Dilworth's mother, Shari Edwards, was also in court Tuesday, where she pleaded not guilty to a charge of culpable negligence.

Both Edwards, 50, and Dilworth turned themselves in to authorities last month to face the charges. Dilworth had been facing as much as 30 years behind bars. Edwards faces five.
