South Florida Cities Offer Film Industry Incentives

Local governments are offering incentives to television and film production companies to keep their projects in Florida.

A state program that offered nearly $300 million in film incentives ended last year. Hoping to keep more production companies from leaving Florida, Miami-Dade County and the city of North Miami now offer tens of thousands of dollars in subsidies for TV, film and video productions within their borders.

According to a Miami Herald report , the city of Miami Beach is drafting ordinances to establish similar incentives.

The head of Miami-Dade County's film office, Sandy Lighterman, said local government incentives could help support smaller productions that keep camera operators, actors, technicians and other entertainment industry professionals employed in Florida.

Lighterman said other Miami-area cities also are considering film incentive programs.
