South Florida Colleges Offer to Help Students Displaced By Hurricanes Maria and Irma

Two South Florida colleges announced Tuesday they will help college students in Puerto Rico displaced by Hurricanes Maria and Irma.

Miami-Dade College will offer in-state tuition to affected students in Puerto Rico. The school said other services for displaced students will be announced soon.

St. Thomas University is also offering a lending hand. The university will provide free room and board through Spring 2018 for up to 100 college students in Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands impacted by Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Students will receive the free room and board on a first-come, first-serve basis upon continuing their studies at STU. The school will also include a free meal plan for the first 100 students enrolled in the program.

“We are committed to helping college students who were affected by the storms continue their education with as much ease and comfort as possible,” said Monsignor Franklyn Casale, President of STU.

To apply, interested students should call the STU Registrar's Office at 305-628-6612 or go to www.stu.edu/support.
