South Florida Mother Forced Teen Daughter Into Prostitution: Police

A South Florida mother was arrested after police say she forced her 16-year-old daughter into prostitution with a suspected drug dealer.

Suzanne Bobbie Calana, 37, was arrested Oct. 23 on charges of human trafficking of a person under 18, giving a controlled substance to a person under 18 and interference with custody, according to a Miami Police arrest report.

Also arrested was 43-year-old Lawrence Franklin Martin, who faces several related charges. Both Calana and Martin were being held without bond Thursday and it was unknown if they have attorneys.

Calana's daughter told police she had been using drugs with her mother since she was 12 years old and to support her drug addiction, she had prostituted herself, the report said.

“The concept that a mother could engage her 12-year-old daughter into the world of drugs, addiction, and prostitution, it’s just unfathomable,” said Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez-Rundle.

The girl said she had recently moved in with Martin, who she said was a drug dealer, the report said. Martin, known as "Paper," forced the girl to prostitute herself with a $150 quota per day because he told her she had to "pay her way," the report said.

“Clearly the pimps took advantage, super advantage of this incredible vulnerability of a mother and a daughter caught in this disgusting web of life,” Rundle said.

Martin also had sex with the teen and gave her drugs, the report said.
