South Florida Procession Honors MLK on Assassination Anniversary

A large procession is being held in South Florida Wednesday to mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The procession of cars will begin at 3 p.m. at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center at 2650 Sistrunk Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale and head to the Tacolcy Center at 6161 Northwest 9th Avenue in Miami.

A special program commemorating the life of MLK will be held before the group heads to Athalie Range Park at 525 Northwest 62nd Street in Miami for another MLK event.

Organizers say they want to remember the importance South Florida played during the civil rights movement and the area's impact on King.

"Along the way we are going to be telling the story of Miami and South Florida’s impact on Dr. King. He began writing his 'I Have a Dream' speech at the Hampton House Motel in Miami in Brownsville. So we have a history and we want to reclaim that history," said Philip Agnew, with Dream Defenders.
