With the Christmas holiday just days away, the roadways and airports across South Florida and around the country have gotten crowded with travelers heading to their destination.

Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale / Hollywood International Airport are expected to have more than 1.7 million people pass through over the holiday season – a six percent increase over 2016.

The next two Saturdays are expected to be the busiest with 100,000 people each day going through FLL, with nearly 150,000 people expected to go through MIA each day from Christmas until New Years.

Across the country, 107 million Americans will travel for the holidays according to AAA – with 97.4 million arriving by car, up three percent from last year. Visits are not long for many, as Friday is predicted to be the busiest day while December 26th has the most return flights scheduled.

Officials are urging safe travel as over 10,000 accidents were reported during the 2016 holiday season with 112 deaths. In an effort to curb drowsy driving, free coffee will be offered at several rest areas along the Florida’s Turnpike from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on December 24th, 25th, 31st and January 1st.

The free beverage will be offered at the Turkey Creek, Canoe Creek, Fort Drum, Fort Pierce and West Palm Beach rest areas.
