South Florida Thanksgiving Travelers Could Be Impacted By Bad Weather

Travelers may need to prepare for some cancellations due to storm.

South Florida travelers may need to prepare for some cancellations as a massive storm that's heading east could cause nightmares just in time for the holiday week.

The storm is expected to drop snow in the Northeast on Wednesday – the busiest travel day around Thanksgiving – which could produce a domino effect on flights out of South Florida's airports.

"We are concerned because I hear what is going to happen on Wednesday,” Steven Arabracchi said at Miami International Airport Monday. “We live in North Carolina so we are getting ready to make the trip."

The impact from the storm was already felt at MIA Sunday when it canceled dozens of flights from Dallas to Miami.

This year, almost one million passengers are expected to pass through the gates at MIA for Thanksgiving, an expected increase of 1.4 percent from 2012. At Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, more than half a million passengers are expected.

"I heard Wednesday is when it’s going to become crazy," Jennifer Roman said at FLL on Monday. "But it looks good, not a lot of people. I was expecting this to be jam-packed, but it doesn’t look that.”

Airport officials are urging travelers to be prepared and arrive at least two and a half hours before their flight in order to park, get to the gate and pass through security lines which will be much longer than usual.

On top of that, passengers should keep an eye on their flight and make sure it’s on time. A great way to do that is with the new TSA travel app which has updated flight statues and lets you know what you can and cannot bring aboard airplanes.
