Family Who Took in Stoneman Shooting Suspect Nikolas Cruz Testifies Before Grand Jury

What to Know

  • James and Kimberly Snead each spent about half an hour in closed-door testimony Wednesday before the panel
  • The Sneads took in Nikolas Cruz after he briefly lived with a family friend following the death of his mother in November

The couple who provided a home to the Parkland school shooting suspect before the Valentine's Day mass shooting has testified before a grand jury considering formal charges in the case.

James and Kimberly Snead each spent about half an hour in closed-door testimony Wednesday before the panel. Their attorney Jim Lewis says they answered all questions and were fully cooperative.

"They're trying to do the right thing and they're in mourning just like everybody else in this community," Lewis said.

Lewis says the couple was shocked by what happened and did not foresee 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz doing something like the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that killed 17 people and wounded 16.

"They still don't know what happened, why this happened, they don't have any answers," Lewis said. "They tried to do the right thing, they tried to provide a home to this young man who lost his mother and didn't have a home. Nobody saw this coming, nobody could predict this."

The Sneads took in Cruz after he briefly lived with a family friend following the death of his mother in November.

Cruz is charged with 17 counts of murder and could face the death penalty.
