A middle school student in Broward County is facing felony charges after he admitted to posting a message in a social media chat threatening to shoot up his school.

Pembroke Pines Police said a fellow student notified officers about the possible threat to Pines Middle School that was posted in an Instagram group chat on Sunday. Threat Assessment Team officers and the school’s administration were notified and an investigation was launched.

Investigators went to the home of the 13-year-old student, who admitted to sending the message but said it was intended to be a joke.

The student was charged with a second degree felony. Officials did not say if any extra security would be placed at the school as an added precaution.
