Student in Custody After Fight at Miami Springs High School

A fight at Miami Springs High School led to one student being taken into police custody Tuesday morning, officials said.

The fight broke out between two students in the cafeteria of the school at 751 Dove Avenue around 10 a.m., Miami-Dade Schools Police officials said.

Teachers called a resource officer to help stop the fight, but when the officer intervened, one of the students began attacking and fighting the officer, officials said.

"Clearly he was out of control, he kept punching everybody. He head butted, I think, one security guard," said Mark Thomas, student.

"Two kids were playing rough and I think one of them took it too serious," said Bryan Tellez, student. "Who would ever punch an officer like that?"

Police were called for backup and took the teen into custody. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue workers also responded to the scene.

The teen hasn't been identified because he's a minor, but police said he'll be charged with battery on an officer.

"It's a typical thing in high school. I mean, fights happen everyday, but to get to this point, I think it was out of line," Thomas said.

Police said the officer wasn't badly injured.
