Student Stabbed at Middle School in Wellington: Police

A school crush may have turned into much more sinister at Polo Park Middle School in Wellington Thursday morning when a female student was injured in a stabbing.

The Palm Beach County School District says the incident happened at about 9:00 a.m. outside the school's cafeteria in the courtyard.

“Everybody from outside ran to try and get into the cafeteria,” said student Erin Montgomery.

The suspect, an eighth-grader, was not far behind the crowd.

“He ran into the cafeteria where Officer Michaels tackled him,” said seventh-grader Tapper Baltista.

The student had to be transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue. The school district says the victim was treated for minor injuries, then released.

The Palm Beach County School District Police are investigating whether or not the stabbing may have been a crush that turned into something more sinister. One student even described the boy’s crush as being “like obsessed with the girl.”

“He liked her and she didn’t like him,” Montgomery said.

The district also indicated that counselors would be on hand for the students Thursday and Friday and there would also be an increased police presence at the school.
