Suspect Arrested in Arson That Destroyed Golf Carts At Miami's Melreese Country Club

Carlos Alberto Crespo, 20, was arrested on arson and burglary charges

Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a fire that destroyed around 40 golf carts at a Miami golf course where David Beckham wants to build a soccer stadium.

Carlos Alberto Crespo, 20, was arrested on arson and burglary charges Thursday in connection with the Tuesday night fire at Melreese Country Club, Miami Police said. He was being held on $15,000 bond Thursday, jail records showed.

Officials from the golf course at 1802 Northwest 37th Avenue said more than 40 carts worth upwards of $500,000 were destroyed in the fire.

Surveillance cameras captured the suspect setting fire to the property, but an anonymous tip led detectives to Crespo, officials said.

Police haven't given a possible motive in the incident.

"Oh I think it's an isolated incident, I think it's just a deranged guy," Melreese director Charlie Deluca said. "We watched him do it, we have him on television. So we watched him do it and the guy is sick."

Last week, city commissioners approved a proposal that would likely clear the way for Beckham and entrepreneur Jorge Mas to lease the land of the course for a new soccer stadium for their MLS team.
