Two people were found dead following an hours-long SWAT standoff with an armed man at a Miami apartment building Friday morning, police said.

Police and witnesses said the incident started as a confrontation between the suspect and a neighbor.

"We know that someone called in reference to his neighbor being with a gun and making threats to him," Miami Police spokesman Rene Pimentel said.

"I just know that there was an argument, something happened, he was walking up and down the hall with a gun saying weird stuff to the neighbors, everyone ran to their apartments and called the cops," Neighbor Julio Marin said.

The suspect was in one of the units for hours as police tried to talk him into giving himself up.

"We negotiated with him for several hours with no response," Pimentel said.

When officers hadn't heard anything from the apartment in awhile, they entered and found the man and a woman dead inside the unit around 6:30 a.m., police said.

Police said they didn't know the woman was inside.Their identities and relationship to each other were unknown.

Marin said he had seen the man shortly before the incident and he seemed fine.

"For anyone to go that drastic change from a couple hours to the next there’s gotta be something that alters you like that," Marin said.

Police are still investigating the incident.

Several streets around the building were closed early Friday as a result of the incident.
