Sweetwater Mayor Fires Several in Project ‘Clean House'

Sweetwater Mayor Jose Diaz has fired several employees and the heads of departments as part of his project "clean house."

Diaz held a news conference Tuesday to discuss the firings, which include those close to former Mayor Manuel Marono, who was removed from office after pleading guilty to a public corruption charge in January. Marono was sentenced to 40 months in prison.

The firings include Marono's godmother, Joanna Rubio, the director of human resources and Anny and Guillermo Chez, the city's finance director and manager of the city vehicles, the Miami Herald reported.

Another three city employees were also fired and a fourth employee's contract wasn't renewed, the paper reported.

"I would like to thank all the residents of Sweetwater for their trust and support. Our residents need to know that I maintain a firm commitment to 'clean house' so that our city government is transparent and we can be proud of our city," Diaz said in a statement. "I will continue to send our message to all our residents that with the actions taken today we can have a better future."
