Shark Bites Teen Surfing at Florida Beach

Authorities say a teen was bitten by a shark while surfing at a Florida beach.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports 18-year-old Reed Zipperer was bitten on his left hand Monday afternoon at New Smyrna Beach. He's the sixth person bitten by a shark this year in Volusia County.

In a video, Zipperer said the bite occurred when he was paddling back out to the water after surfing on a wave.

"I literally put my hand down and then the shark just absolutely nailed it," Zipperer said.

Ocean Rescue Capt. Tammy Malphurs says the teen was in waist-deep water at the time of the bite. He was treated at the beach and then drove himself to the hospital.

On Saturday, an Arizona man was bitten in the leg not far from the scene of Monday's bite.
