Teen Charged in Rabbi's Murder Seeking Release on Bond

The teen accused of murdering a rabbi during a robbery in North Miami Beach was back in court Friday for a bond hearing.

A witness to the shooting death of Rabbi Joseph Raksin stood up in court and pointed to DeAndre Charles as the person who ran away from the scene of the murder.

It was August of 2014 when Rabbi Raksin was shot and killed while walking to temple. His daughter and other supporters filled the courtroom Friday. So did the mother, relatives and friends of Charles.

The witness, who does not want to be identified for safety reasons, selected Charles's photo out of a lineup, testifying he felt obligated to pick one.

Adam Goodman, who represents the 15-year-old defendant, spoke after the hearing.

"Things come out when people are in court and we saw for example the witness said that he felt obligated to pick someone out of a lineup, that's kind of a problem," Goodman said.

Charles insists he was at home at the time of the murder. His mother has said that too. He's charged with murder and is being held on no bond.

The purpose of Friday's hearing was to see if he's eligible for bond.

"It is difficult to go back and remember what happened in August to see that we still have robberies in our neighborhood and people getting held up with guns," said Alan Sakowitz, a friend of Raksin's family.

No decision was made Friday and the bond hearing is expected to continue next week.
