Teen Fire Starter Granted Bond

Bond set at $250,000

Jesus Mendez may soon join his family after a Broward judge set a $250,000 bond for the teen that set Michael Brewer on fire.

Mendez, who celebrated his 16th birthday behind bars, was one of five teens who allegedly attacked Brewer during a vengeful attack that has made national headlines.

Police singled out Mendez as the one who lit the match that sent 15-year-old Brewer up in flames and running for a nearby pool.

In court Friday, Mendez's parents described him as a calm boy who was shy and embarassed because it took him longer than other kids to learn things in school. They said he just got in with the wrong crowd, which led to the heinous attack on Oct. 12.

Brewer's family, which did not attend the hearing, did not want any of the three boys currently charged with the attack released from bond, the prosecutor said.

Mendez, Denver Jarvis and Matthew Bent all face second-degree attempted murder charges. They have all pleaded not guilty. Mendez's bond could mean all of the teens could be getting out of jail before trial.

And while the three juveniles fight to get out of jail, their alleged victim is still fighting for his life.

Brewer was released from the hospital this week after he reported have severe trouble breathing. The teen has endured several skin grafts and intense physical therapy after being burned over nearly 70 percent of his body.
