Thief Who Stole Toddler's iPad in Tamarac Beauty Salon Caught: BSO

Authorities say a Crime Stoppers tip led them to the teen responsible for stealing an iPad out of the hands of a 4-year-old boy in a Tamarac beauty salon.

The 16-year-old Lauderhill boy was arrested Monday on one count of strong-arm robbery, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.

BSO received several tips after video of the theft made national news. Robbery detectives discovered the teen was on probation and found him through his probation officer, officials said.

When detectives and the teen's mother went to his home, he tried to run but was taken into custody, officials said.

On Tuesday, the teen was ordered by a judge to be held until Aug. 31 so he can undergo a competency evaluation.

The teen had recently been released from a residential program.

The robbery happened on July 24 at Grace Salon at 5449 N. State Road 7. Officials said the 4-year-old boy was watching cartoons on the iPad while he waited for his mother when the thief ripped the device out of his hands and ran out of the store.

After the story was reported, 1976 Boxing Olympic Gold Medalist Howard Davis, Jr. donated a new iPad to the toddler.
