Thief Wins (Police) Academy Award For Best Actor During Robbery

Sheriff deputies need help catching drama club bandits

A Broward thief is being called the Russell Crowe of his profession after pulling off a dramatic performance worthy of an academy award during a recent gas station robbery.

The suspect is apparently a member of a bigger cast who has to stay up nights rehearsing or watching those classic "I've fallen and I can't get up" commercials.

The leading man, known by Broward Sheriff's detectives as "The Injured," walked into a gas station in North Lauderdale and went to the back to get a bottled water.

Surveillance cameras from the May 31 robbery show him looking around for a moment, before taking a couple of steps and then sprawling out on the floor as if he had been hit with a sniper's bullet.

The motionless man draws the attention of customers and the cashier, who then goes to the manager's office to get the man in charge. Meanwhile, an onlooker who detectives call "The Lookout," pretends to call 911, but what he really is doing is keeping the manager and cashier occupied for the third member in the dramatic play.

"The Thief" sneaks into the unoccupied manager's office and loots it of cash.

The whole production takes five minutes. Then, "The Injured" miraculously comes out of his coma, jumps up, and walks out of the gas station.

If you recognize any of these individuals, you might want to contact the Academy of just call Broward Crimestoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
