Third Suspect Arrested in Fatal FAU Shooting

A third person has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a 19-year-old Florida Atlantic University student who was gunned down at an off-campus apartment in December.

Boca Raton detectives have charged 22-year-old Alexander Gillis with first degree murder and robbery with a firearm. He was arrested Tuesday in Miami-Dade county.

Police previously arrested and charged 19-year-old Donavan Henry, an FAU soccer player, in connection with the shooting.

An investigation into Henry's phone records led police to both Gillis and to 23-year-old Rodrick Woods who was arrested in January.

On the night of December 29, Boca Raton Police responded to a shooting at the U-Park Apartments, located at 135 Northwest 20th Street, and found 19-year-old Nicholas Acosta suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Acosta died later that evening.

The teen's girlfriend told police that five men entered the apartment and ordered the couple to the ground before shooting Acosta. She told police a bag of marijuana was missing after the shooting. Police checked Acosta's phone and found a text conversation that led them to Henry.

Witness accounts of the shooters' physical descriptions matched what was captured on surveillance video, including Gillis' distinctive tattoos and a pronounced limp he has from a gunshot wound he sustained last year.

An investigation is ongoing and additional charges and arrests may be forthcoming, police say.
