Officials: Safe Containing Nearly $5,000 Stolen From La Progresiva School in Little Havana

The La Progresiva Presbyterian School in Little Havana was closed Monday after school officials say a thief broke in and stole a safe containing $5,000.

Principal Melissa Rego told NBC 6 that it appears that someone broke in through the roof and slipped down to the first floor of the school, which is located at 2480 Northwest Seventh Street in Little Havana.

Miami Police say the suspect was on the property for more than an hour going from room to room and vandalizing the building.

"This criminal basically comes in this school like if it was his own home," said Lt. Freddie Cruz of Miami Police.

According to Rego, a safe containing about $5,000 was stolen. The money was supposed to pay for two school trips for students.

"My heart is just torn up, but we have to trust God and know that everything is going to be fine and eventually we'll make it up somehow," Rego said.

Surveillance video obtained from the school appears to show a male wearing a New York Yankees cap, jeans and a green jacket rummaging through a school office. The person in the video is also seen hitting the surveillance camera with an object.

Police described the suspect as a white male, 30-40 years old, 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds with a full beard.

Anyone with information should contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
