Toddler, Grandmother Killed in Krome Avenue Accident, 1 Toddler Clings to Life: Police

A toddler and the toddler's grandmother have died and another toddler is clinging to life following a horrific crash off of Krome Avenue in Miami-Dade Thursday.

Police say the incident happened just after 5 a.m. nine miles west of Krome Avenue near Tamiami Trail. Initial reports indicate that the woman, who was driving with two toddlers, lost control of her pick-up truck and broke through the guardrail, plummeting into the canal below.

A passing motorist later noticed the damaged guardrail and reported it to police. When officials arrived on scene, they saw the bodies of two toddlers floating in the water.

The toddlers, along with the woman, were air rescued but the woman and one of the toddlers did not survive the accident.

The third toddler is in extremely serious condition and is not expected to live, police said.

The woman was identified as 41-year-old Farren Andrea Cypress. The children are a 2-year-old boy and 1-year-old girl, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to the initial investigation, it does not appear that the children were properly restrained in the vehicle.

The westbound lanes of Tamiami Trail were completely shut down after Krome Avenue for several hours as crews investigated the scene.

The lanes have since been reopened.
