Children Were Home Alone During Fort Lauderdale House Fire: Police

What to Know

  • Officers were unable to get inside the home, but firefighters were able to enter from the back of the home and rescue them.

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department said it is investigating a house fire in which two children were hospitalized as a case of child neglect because they were home alone.

The children, aged 3 and 8, are being treated at the Broward Health Medical Center. Their condition is not known.

Crews from FLPD and Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue arrived at the home, located at 1551 SW 38th Avenue, at about 11:45 a.m. Officers were unable to get inside the home, but firefighters were able to enter from the back of the home and rescued them.

Some officers were being evaluated for smoke inhalation at Broward Health. No arrests or charges have yet been announced, police said. FLFR is investigating the fire.
