Two dozen people were displaced after a fire swept through their Deerfield Beach apartment building late Monday.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue units responded to the fire at the Deerfield Palms Apartments at 399 Southwest 13th Place around 11:30 p.m., BSO spokesman Mike Jachles said.

Firefighters had been called to the building by two women and their sons who had heard popping noises and then saw smoke and flames, Jachles said.

When they arrived, the firefighters encountered heavy fire in the back bedroom of the second floor unit. The fire moved through the roof of the building as about 40 firefighters from three departments responded.

The blaze was brought under control in about 30-40 minutes, but not before three units suffered fire damage and another three units sustained smoke and water damage.

No injuries were reported but about two dozen people were displaced, Jachles said. The Red Cross said they were helping eight adults and 11 children with emergency aid..

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
