Two Florida high school students honored the victims of the Sept. 11th terrorist attacks through a special tribute dedicated to firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Samuel Martin and Devin Turner climbed 110 flights of stairs to honor those lost in the World Trade Center attacks.

While the two Polk County students rested between flights, they recited the names of the 343 New York City firefighters killed protecting fellow Americans.

“Each participant pays tribute to a FDNY firefighter by climbing or walking the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center,” the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation said. “Your individual tribute not only remembers the sacrifice of an FDNY brother, but symbolically completes their heroic journey to save others.”

The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is a nationwide event honoring FDNY firefighters, according to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation website.

Martin and Turner, students at the Bartow Medical & Fire Academy at Bartow High School, decided to participate all on their own.

"I am very proud of these young men and the fact that they did this on their own,” said Kozette Hubbard, a BHS Medical and Fire Academy instructor. “We push our cadets to be forward thinkers and always remember service to others before self ... this is just a small snapshot of what the cadets are capable of."

A photo of the students was shared on Polk County Public Schools Facebook page.
