Two Miami-Dade Inmates Die in Possible Drug Overdose

Possible heroin or fentanyl drug overdoses at a Miami-Dade County jail killed two inmates and led to the hospitalization of two others.

The incident occurred late Wednesday at the Miami-Dade County Pre-Trial Detention Center located at 1321 NW 13th Street.

Investigators are attempting to determine what drug caused the overdoses, the Miami Herald reports. Officers responding to the incident wore protective suits and brought drug-sniffing dogs.

Sources told the Miami Herald the dead inmates were identified as Juan Salgado, 24, awaiting trial for murder, and Jesus Perdomo, 25, jailed on a probation violation on a murder charge.

“Miami Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department would like to extend our condolences to the families of the deceased. MDCR correctional officers responded appropriately and timely to a medical emergency to include emergency room transportation," MDCR Interim Director Daniel Junior told NBC 6 in a statement. "Miami Dade Police Department is conducting an investigation, which is the normal protocol. Due to the on-going nature of the investigation, no further comment can be made at this time.”
